Reached a weight-loss plateau?

2013-11-19 6:17 AM

When you find that your weekly weight loss has stalled that’s often known as a ‘weight loss plateau’ and many dieters find the sudden lack of progress deeply frustrating. Herbalife’s Nutrition Expert Susan Bowerman helps you understand why your weight may plateau and give you some ideas to make sure you continue to meet your goals so that your weight will start moving again.

Five tips to move off the plateau:

  • Use a food diary to keep track of your calorie intake - You may have been more careful when you started your diet — weighing and measuring everything that passed your lips — but you might not be as accurate as you once were. This will get you back on track.
  • Replace two meals a day with a protein shake to help you stay within your calorie limit. When you make your shake, you know exactly what goes into it — and how many calories are in the protein powder, the milk and the fruit — so it takes the guesswork out of calorie counting. Use the shake for two meals a day, have a healthy third meal, and fill in with snacks of low fat protein foods, vegetables and fruits.
  • Dine out less often - No matter how careful you think you are when you go to a restaurant, it's usually difficult to accurately estimate how many calories you're eating, because it's often hard to tell exactly how foods are prepared.
  • Step up your activity, particularly strength training - If you've been working out for a while and haven't increased the intensity of your activity, you might not be burning as many calories as you used to. Add some new moves to your exercise routine, increase the intensity, and pump some iron.
  • You might actually be at the right weight - If you can, get your body composition checked. Muscle is ‘denser' and takes up less space than body fat — so if you are carrying more muscle than the average person, you might weigh more than you think you should. If your body fat is within normal range, then you may not have much — if any — additional weight to lose

Best way to prepare quinoa

2013-11-07 9:59 AM

I'm Susan Bowerman, registered dietician, and today, we're talking about quinoa! Quinoa is a healthy whole grain that's easy to prepare. Since quinoa is gaining popularity, I thought it would be best to show you how to prepare it so that you can enjoy a delicious quinoa dish during your next meal.

Quinoa is a seed that we eat as a whole grain. You could cook it plain, but today I'm going to cook my quinoa with some vegetables in it.

First, heat up your saucepan with a little bit of olive oil. Next add your vegetables. I've got some broccoli, carrots, and red peppers that I've diced up. You can use any vegetables you want—zucchini, tomatoes, mushrooms, whatever appeals to you. There are no rules to this. After they've sautéed a bit, add your quinoa and then your liquid. Today, I'm using chicken broth. You can use vegetable broth or beef broth or just plain water too. Bring this to a boil, then down to a simmer. Cover and let it cook for about 10-12 minutes. Then it's done!

Play around with quinoa in your recipe, quinoa is versatile. It's something you should include in your diet more often

Looking for ways to mix up your Herbalife Formula 1 shake? Try this delicious, healthy Cherry Dream shake mix from Registered Dietitian, Susan Bowerman. It's deliciously sweet and packs extra protein without excess calories! Watch on to learn how to make it in just a few simple steps.

*** Thick and delicious cherry vanilla shake, coming right up! ***

I'm Susan Bowerman, registered dietician, and today I'm going to show you how to make a thick and delicious cherry vanilla shake using Herbalife Formula 1 Nutritional Shake Mix, vanilla flavor. Let's add a handful of frozen cherries, and a kind of unusual ingredient -- I'm using ricotta cheese to thicken my shake up even more than usual.

You know, there's a couple ways you can make your Herbalife shake extra thick. Ice cubes work, frozen fruit works, but this ricotta cheese, which is made with whey protein, is going to really make my shake extra thick and give it a really creamy texture.

I've got 250ml (8oz) of milk in the blender. Add two scoops of Herbalife Formula 1, and a nice big handful of frozen cherries for a beautiful color and great taste. Now add 80 grams or about a third of a cup of ricotta cheese - trust me - this will taste so good!

Put on the top and blend it up. And by doing this, I've added maybe about 60 calories, but the bonus is I've also added about 8 grams of whey protein to my shake. Cherry flavor is just so good with the vanilla.

I hope you'll try this at home, you can try other fruits with it too. Ricotta cheese is mild and it's also a little bit sweet so it blends really really well with any fruits. Give it a try today.
